Maloof Money Cup Crowns New Champ:
Lutzka Edges Out Busenitz for New York Title and Record $160,000
(New York – June 5, 2011) – The Maloof Money Cup New York presented by Vans, came to a exciting close Sunday with Greg Lutzka claiming the title and earning skateboarding’s largest cash prize: $160,000. Held at the newly-renovated Maloof Skate Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, the event brought out more than 25,000 skateboarding fans, with thousands of lining the gates in anticipation to see the world’s best professional skaters battle it out for skateboarding’s most coveted title. Skate fans around the world watched the live telecast on FUEL TV and the live webcast on maloofmoneycup.com in record numbers.
The day kicked off with the vitaminwater am contest where 20-year-old Evan Smith impressed a packed New York crowd with a nose manual to firecracker down the Brooklyn Banks 9-stair, one of the most unique tricks of the entire contest. Smith claimed the am title, earning $1,500, a one-year supply of vitaminwater and a trip to the open qualifiers for the Maloof Money Cup South Africa.
But the big story of the day was the Pro Street Finals and the new innovative head-to-head elimination format that focused the crowd on the two skaters in the heat, encouraging the most difficult tricks and captivating the audience. Crowd favorite Dennis Busenitz entered the finals after just making the cut in the semis, earning the last spot in the final 12, but his kickflip over the hubba in the first heat of the final set the tone for the rest of his amazing performance. In the end, he couldn’t hold off Lutzka who landed trick after trick, ranging from a frontside 270 to backside nose bluntslide to a frontside bigspin to noseslide.
“This was the best contest. The head to head format was great; better than having five guys going at once,” said Lutzka. “The crowd was so into it; it’s easier for them to follow it and it’s more exciting for them to watch. When you’re skating head to head with someone else, you vibe off them. You never know who you’re going to get paired with. It’s like a game of Mortal Combat.”
The stage for the competition was the skater-designed street course that was donated by the Maloofs and partner, Vans, to the city after last year’s event. The course’s features were modeled after iconic NY skate spots such as the Brooklyn Banks and the Flushing Meadows ledge over the grate.
