Thousands of Skate Fans Across Kimberley Turn Out for Olympic-Style Welcome to Kick off Maloof Money Cup Skateboarding World Championships

(Kimberley, South Africa – Sept. 29, 2011) – The opening ceremony of the Maloof Money Cup electrified the night Wednesday in Kimberley, South Africa at the just-completed state-of-the-art Kimberley Convention Center Amphitheater. The people of Kimberley and from cities across the Northern Cape showed up in masses to attend the celebration kickoff for the Maloof Money Cup Skateboarding World Championships. The top musical talent in Kimberley, native African dancers, giant 15-foot puppets and a laser and fireworks show dazzled the overflowing crowd of over 3,000. The Deputy Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa, Premier of the Northern Cape Province Hazel Jenkins and Joe Maloof spoke to the significance bringing the world’s greatest skateboarding event to Kimberley will have on generations of kids and youth, promoting a new, affordable activity that keeps kids away from crime, cultivating a new generation of skateboarders and putting Kimberley on the world map as an extreme sports destination.
“It was absolutely amazing to see the Kimberley locals embrace skateboarding so much and to have such incredible support from the Northern Cape Government,” said Pro Skater Geoff Rowley. “To put so much effort and energy to support and promote a skateboarding event and to involve all the local people in such a great music show and fireworks display it was incredible to see. Passion everywhere!”
“We’re so proud to bring the world’s greatest skateboarding event to Kimberley and tonight’s turn-out definitely proved that the whole province is behind the event,” said Premier Jenkins. “This contest showcases the best talent in the world and shines a spotlight on Kimberley, inspiring kids across the Northern Cape province to take up skateboarding and cultivate the skill and talent to become one of the best in the world.”
“With this world class skate park now home in Kimberley, it is only a matter of time before we see a skateboarding champion emerge from Kimberley,” said Maloof. “This is going to be a contest watched by people around the world. We are so grateful to the people of Kimberley for their tremendous hospitality and for welcoming us with such an incredible display of local pride.”
The Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships begin Friday with the Pro Street Qualifiers and the Pro Vert World Championships and continue through Sunday. A benefit concert Saturday night will be headlined by Grammy-winning artist Lil Jon.
