Skate Theory Reports 2008 results

The Maloof Money Cup rolled out this past weekend. Paul Rodriguez, takes the $100,000 first prize in the men?s pro street final. Pierre Luc-Gagnon gets $75,000 for his pro vert victory. The finals went down on July 13, 2008 at the Orange County Fair.

Skateboarder Magazine Reports

Joe Maloof, owner of the NBA‟s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, is embarking on the world of action sports with his announcement of the Maloof Money Cup (www.maloofmoneycup.com). A six-event, three- day festival focusing on the excitement and energy of skateboarding, the Maloof Money Cup will take place July 11-13, 2008 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California during the opening weekend of the Orange County Fair.

Sanctioned as the National Championship by World Cup Skateboarding (www.wcsk8.com), the Maloof Money Cup will become the largest pursed event in the history of professional skateboarding with over $400,000 in prize money.

The competition will take place in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens on June 5-6, 2010, with the winner earning $100,000. The competition, which first took place in California in 2008, will also have a West Coast leg at the Orange County (Calif.) Fairgrounds from Aug. 4-8.

California Skateparks in conjunction with the city of New York Parks and Recreation Departments Adopt-A-Park program will create a permanent world-class skate park that will be used for the competition.

Joe and Gavin Maloof, who own the Sacramento Kings, said they would hold the event June 5 and 6 at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. The winner will make $100,000. The Maloofs will donate the $1.8 million skate park they will build for the competition to the city.

In some amazing news for NYC skateboarding, the Maloof brothers have announced that they are bringing their big money Maloof Cup to the city this summer. 5Boros Steve Rodriguez will design the course along with Chris Cole, Geoff Rowley, and Joe Ciaglia from California Skateparks. After the event the $1.8 million dollar installation at Flushing Meadows will be donated to the city and will no doubt further establish the Queens spot as a world wide skate destination. Expect madness to descend on June 5th and 6th as the east coast goes nuts trying to snatch a piece of the $250,000 total purse.

Park built for the competition will be donated to the CIty of NYC. Sponsors Vans and Monster Energy will help with the costs of the park so it can be given to the City Parks and Recreation Departments "Adopt-A-Park" program. WIth large open spaces for skateparks a rarity in dense NYC, this park will be eagerly welcomed.

Now in its third year, this event takes place at the Orange County Fair in California. Billed as the richest skate contest in existence, the Prize Money at the event in 2008 totalled $450,000. With massive financial backing from the contest?s creator (millionaire sports investors Joe and Gavin Maloof) the street course is always on the innovative side of things, attempting to emulate real skate spots and taking elements from the increasingly popular skate-plaza style of park.
