Skateboarding for Hope-Johannesburg
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
Gavin from Boogaloos sent us the recap and photos of the amazing Skateboarding for Hope event held at Stoneridge Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. Check it out!
It was a perfect day at Stoneridge with a total of 62 skaters participating in the jam sessions. Durban ripper, Thalente Biyela flew up from KZN to participate in this stop and that move paid off for sure, as he walked away with loads of cash and the ultimate prize - The Wildcard entry to the MMC Am!
Big cash winners of the day included:
Thalente Biyela - Body jar revert
Adam Woolf- Front Side Flip
Sam Vider - 50/50 Front Side Lip
Thanks to Ashley for bringing the kids out from Alex. Those kids show some up and coming talent for sure! Besides the lack of power from "City Power" for part of the day, the Alex & local rippers definitely unleashed their power. Thanks to Wandile and Sam for keeping it real, as usual! 25 Element boards were handed out to needy kids along with loads of giveaways from Converse & Maloof plus R5k in cash won!
Maloof Money Cup, Kumba Iron Ore, Northern Cape Tourism & Boogaloos - What a Legacy!
Converse, Dickies, Element, VZ, Monster Energy, Volcom, Iron Fist, AV Skateboarding - Thank You for supporting and being a part of this amazing initiative.
Thank you to Old School Productions
See you in Cape Town!

September 1st Skate Jam at Kimberley Plaza
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
We decided to mix it up a bit for the first of the month and did this weekend's contest a little bit differently. Boogaloos was kind enough to provide us with a street course to use on road tours, and when we aren't on the road, the kids are stepping it up on the obstacles here at the Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberley. We decided to have a contest for both beginners and advanced divisions on the Boogaloos obstacles.
With only a handful of days left before the park closes for renovations for the Maloof Money Cup, kids are more hungry to shred than we've seen in months! The beginners consisted of 14 total skaters, and after 2 jam sessions, we chose the top 6 overall to compete in the finals. Some standouts include Enrique Ortell's pop shuvit off the box as well as a kickflip off, as well as some killer skating from De Aar skater Werner Smith and Kimberley local Ebrahim Hassan AKA BB. In the end it was the overall consistency and terrorization of all obstacles from Caleb Goa that earned him first place and a new set of wheels. Darren Joseph was right behind Caleb and earned second place an R200 at Thando Skate Shop for tricks like rock n roll on the wedge and 180's off the box. The beginner's killed it and they certainly won't be considered beginners for much longer!
Potchefstroom skaters made the drive to Kimberley to skate the plaza for the weekend and had some of the Kimberley locals nervous for the advanced division contest, those guys kill it!
We decided to include previous beginners contest winners Mohammad Hassan and Damian Bramley in the advanced division for a chance to skate with the big guys. I think a lot of skaters were surprised to see how well Damian skated against some of the older guys; his consistency and ability to skate many of the obstacles earned him R100 at Thando Skate Shop and third place! In the finals we saw a smooth the flip from Theo off the box along with a 50-50 front shut on the grind box, earning him second place and R200 at Thando Skate Shop. Potchefstroom local, Luwayne Bothma, came out of nowhere with some insane tricks like kickflip back lip and fakie big spin lip on the flat bar along with a huge shuvit tailgrap to flat off the launch ramp. Luwayne earned first place and a new set of trucks!
Congrats to all the skaters for holding it down on the first of the month!

Skateboarding for Fun Activation
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
Thursday was poppin’ at the Maloof Plaza for the Skateboarding for Fun activation! Filled with skate clinics, giveways, live performances, and best trick contests, SABC was there to catch the action and film in insert for ‘Morning Live’ to air this Monday at 6:45am!
Over 50 kids were bussed in from Galeshewe township in Kimberley, South Africa for a skateboarding coaching clinic held by Maurice Obaray, Chinner, and Kimberley wildcard winners Warrick Delport, DBH, and Gerhard Botha. Thanks to Boogaloos for sponsoring 24 skateboards that were given away for free to the skateboarders who showed the most potential during the clinic!
Some standouts of the day included the dance-off between 8 year old Muhammad Hassan and a member of the Krisis dance crew. Muhammad killed it! He was also interviewed by SABC, which made it what he claims to be his third TV news appearance. The skate clinics were followed by awesome performaces by the Krisis Crew, Extreme dot com, Majaivana, and Black Converse dance crew(s) and a performace by Blue Skye. To top of the craziness, the Maloof babes threw a mini party on the course, it was insane!
We capped the day off with 2 best trick jam sessions featuring Kimberley’s best skaters.
The first jam session featured cash for tricks, where skaters were given R100 for each gnarly trick they could throw down! Some standout cash winners included DBH, Gerhard Botha, Dylan Baylefield, and William Jenkins, to name a few.
Dudes were throwing down on the tech section in the second jam session! The second jam session was judged with help of our guest judges, Kimberley wildcard winners DBH, Warrick Delport, and Gerhard Botha along with Maurice Obaray. In the end it was Jacques Reynecke in third with a fakie bigflip on the bank, and Martin Kotze in second with a manual up the many pad along the flat all the way to the stairs. Nico van Hayssteen battled for a BS 5-0 back 180 out and pulled it, earning him first place. Congrats to all the Kimberley skaters for killing it!
Big thanks goes out to Gavin from Boogaloos for the donation of the skateboards, the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture as well as everybody from Northern Cape Tourism for making this event a success! Big thanks also goes out to the Krisis Crew, Extreme dot com, Majaivana, and Black Converse dance crews and Blue Skye for putting on some killer performances!

Kimberley weekend festivities
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
It was a busy weekend at the Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberley, South Africa. Friday started off with a contest on the quarter pipe. Standouts included Lleyellyn Botha, Brad Baley, Gerhard Botha, Jino Modise, and Armand van der Merwe. Gerhard took 1st place with a big flip on the quarter pipe. Trailing Gerhard was Jino Modise with a frontside rock on the big quarter, and Armand van der Merwe in third with afrontside air transfer. It's rad to see all the skaters skate more transition! Later that night we turned on the lights til 9pm to do a bit of filming. Marty Kotze noseslid the big 4 stair hubba, it was sick!
Saturday consisted of two contests including the skaters' favorite game of skate along with a new concept, the obstacle game of skate.
Game of skate finalists included Martin Kotze, Theo Setsetse, and William Jenkins. Martin took several out with tricks like fakie big flips and shuvit late flips. Will made it with his huge bag of tricks and Theo took over with his consistency and switch tricks. In the end, Theo came out on top, with Will in second and Theo in third.
The obstacle game of skate was a new concept that we tried at the plaza. Skaters played skate on any obstacle in the whole park. With 3 rounds before the finals, some standout games included a game between Jino and Armand and another between Damian and Jacques. In the end, Gerhard Botha's quarter pipe consistency landed him a new Mystery deck and 1st place. Theo Setsetse came in second with Jacques Reynecke right behind in third.
Sunday was the youngsters' time to shine during the beginners contest. It was cool to see those who would normally be too timid to enter our regular best trick contest and give credit to the beginners for putting in work. Newcomer Dion Booicen impressed the judges with his wallie up the wedge and ollies off the box, landing him third place. Plaza regular Aiden Peterson ollied the 3 stair and kickflipped off the box, earning him second place. Our most enthusiastic and energetic skater, 8 year old Muhammad Hassan, hands down swept the competition by skating everything in the park and doing a variety of tricks like Bertleman slides on the bank, nose grabs off the ledge, hippy jumping over the flatbar, and grinding up and down the bank. Congrats to all our beginners for shredding the contest and putting the finishing touches on a rad weekend at the skate plaza. Things are starting to pick up here at the plaza as we wind down for the MMC next month! Check out the photo gallery for additional coverage of the weekend's events.

The crew arrived to Nonzwakazi stadium to a cold and windy morning and very few skaters, but things changed as the day turned into a packed crowd and a beautiful sunny day in De Aar, South Africa.
A few skaters from Kimberley showed up to skate the contest, one being Gerhard Botha, who was on point and determined to finally take home the wildcard entry. During the first jam session, we awarded the skaters money for tricks. De Aar locals Werner Smith and Michiel van der Wadt split R600 for ripping the course and giving it 110%. Other skaters that took some cash include Martin Kotze with a crook on the out ledge, DBH with a the flip off the launch ramp, and William Jenkins with a bs flip off the launch ramp.
De Aar came prepared to witness some incredible skating, and they were by far the most live crowd we've witnessed in a while!
Jam session 1 results: 3rd-Llewellyn Botha (fake 540 big spin off box), 2nd-Martin Kotze (kick flip 50-50 box, bs 5-0 out ledge, kick flip manual), 1st-Gerhard Botha (smith down rail, feeble down rail)
Jam session 2 results: 3rd-Martin Kotze (crook out ledge, 180 nosegrind box), 2nd-DBH (tre flip launch ramp, 50-50 front shuvit out on the box), 1st-Gerhard Botha (50-50 down rail, board slide up rail, nollie lip slide down rail).
Gerhard Botha killed it the whole day and showed the best overall consistency earning him the wildcard entry! Gerhard will skate the Maloof Money Cup AM this September! Congrats, Gerhard!
Over 80 De Aar kids signed up for the skateboard clinics, which were taught by Llewellyn, Warrick, Chinner, Will I Am, and DBH with help from Fundi and Peter Mac, of course. 30 skateboards were handed away to the kids who showed the most potential on board. Thanks to Peter McKuchane and Northern Cape Tourism for providing the skateboards!
Big thanks to our helpers Llewellyn, William, and DBH as well as Warrick along with everyone from Northern Cape Tourism-Fundi, Pieter, Destination, Tebogo, and Peter McKuchane! Big shout out to Old School productions for the t shirts and to Boogaloos for the support!

MEDIA RELEASE AUGUST 2012
SKATEBOARDING TRANSFORMS LIVES
The Skateboarding for Hope community outreach initiative is literally transforming the lives of the youth of South Africa as it traverses the country to introduce the sport of skateboarding to local youngsters.
The road show is a joint campaign between American-based Maloof Skateboarding and the Northern Cape Provincial Government, which has been running for the past two years, and culminates at the Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships in Kimberley in September. As a government collective, the province has set their target on promoting skateboarding as an affordable, accessible lifestyle alternative and has been using the road show as a platform for skateboarding demonstrations, competitions and life skills development.
The Maloof contest is considered to be the premier showcase for professional and amateur skateboarding in the world and was hosted in the Northern Cape for the first time in 2011. The enthusiastic response to the first competition has led to the extension of the hosting contract until 2015. The Skateboarding for Hope road show helps to take a yearly event and expand it to a year-long event to reach so many more kids throughout the country.
After the huge success of the first competition at the amazing skate plaza in Kimberley, the youth of the Northern Cape has embraced skateboarding as a sport with hundreds of skateboarding enthusiasts practising their skateboarding skills on a weekly basis under the watchful eye of the skate park director and top local riders. The skate plaza has become a popular hang out amongst the youth with regular clinics, demonstrations and best trick competitions and skateboarding fans travelling from all over the country to experience the plaza.
Due to the commitment from the provincial government, skateboarding has already been encoded as a school sport within the province and four community skate parks are currently being developed within the four regions of the province. According to MEC John Block of the Department of Tourism Development and Economic Affairs has definitely been a change agent within the Northern Cape. “Our youth faces tremendous socio-economic challenges and skateboarding is helping to create an amazing youth subculture, which transcends cultural and historical borders. Traveling through the province visiting different venues with the Skateboarding for Hope tour has shown how skateboarding is connecting our youth and building communities,” mentions Block.
The Kimberley Skate Plaza has quickly grown in reputation and experts reckon that the level of talent showcased by local youngsters is of an extremely high standard and could catapult them to the professional skateboarding arena within a couple of years.
According to Tim McFerran of Maloof Skateboarding, skateboarding has grabbed the imagination of South African youth in a spectacular fashion. “Following the inaugural Maloof championships last year, we have witnessed a surge of incredibly talented young skateboarders. It has been impressive to see how much they improve between each of my visits to Kimberley. There is a young boy called Damian Bramley, who started skating after last year’s event, and with less than a year’s training has the potential to become one of the best vert skaters,” explains McFerran.
14-year old Theo Setsetsefrom Botswana is another skateboarding success story and actually moved to boarding school in Kimberley after attending last year’s Maloof Money Cup in order to skate the plaza. Expert skateboarders reckon that he is exhibiting some of the most incredible board control and skills for someone his age. “Skateboarding is very competitive in Kimberley, but I love skating here. The skate park is a great starting point as it keeps the kids off the streets. Skating is a hobby that keeps you from everything bad,” says Theo, who has already won two skating competitions at the plaza during the past few months. “I want to keep progressing with my skating and hope to be able to skate in the Maloof Money Cup one day.”
During the run-up to the 2012 Maloof Money Cup, which will take place in Kimberley from 28 – 30 September, the Skateboarding for Hope tour will stop in De Aar, Soweto, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Springbok and Cape Town.

Skateboarding for Hope Tour Stop in Kuruman
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
The skateboarding for Hope Tour arrived at Mothibistad Sports Ground to an eager group of skaters and spectators. Several skaters traveled hours to Kuruman in hopes of earning the wildcard entry to the Maloof Money Cup Am in September.
The day started off with a skate clinic where Warrick Delport and Chinner with the help of Tumi Lyon, Jino Modise, and Moustache taught several kids how to skate. The top 25 kids that showed the most potential on a skateboard were awarded with a free Element complete!
The first skate competition of the day was the “Cash for Tricks” jam, where the judges awarded R100 to each rad trick that they saw during the 15 minute jam session. Thoriso Gaobuse aka “Steeze Magoo” came up on a few hundred Rand with tricks like kickflip back tails and feebles down the rail. Olorato also earned a few hundred Rand with insane tricks like varial heel back lip on the flat bar. Fan favorite “Mystery Man”, skated the contest in all black clothes, a ski mask, and sunglasses! Mystery man pulled a back lip down the rail and earned R100. Mothusi Nobela also earned a few hundred Rand with tricks like nollie shuv 5-0 on the box.
The first best trick skate jam featured rad skating from more skaters including Gerhard Botha and Marvin Matthews alongside crowd favorite Mystery Man, Steeze Magoo, Olorato, and Mothusi, just to name a few. Mothusi secured 1st place and R900 with a noseslide on the bank from flat along with a few other hammers, Olorato ripped it up and got 2nd place and R600 with tricks like a boardslide up the rail, Thoriso aka Steeze Magoo did a kickflip back tail to fakie on the box first try, earning him R400 and 3rd place.
With the second best trick jam about to start, it was anybody’s game. Mystery man aka Private Number skated super hard the whole day and pulled a crook shuv out on the box, but not enough to place. Gerhard Botha was stepping it up and earned 3rd place and R400 with a 50-50 down the rail along with a few other tricks. First and second place from jam #1 switched seats this round, Olorato knew he had to step it up and put the flat bar on top of the wedge and boardslid it and noseslid it, earning him 1st place and R900 in jam 2. Mothusi did nollie shuv manny and nose manny shuv on the big box, earning him 2nd place and R600 in jam 2.
It was a tough decision, but at the end of the day, Mothusi Nobela took home the wildcard entry for the Maloof Money Cup Am. Mothusi will be representing Kuruman during the Maloof Money Cup Am contest September 28-30!
Congrats to Mothusi and thank you to Peter McKuchane and everybody at Northern Cape Tourism and Boogaloos for their help! Thanks to all the Kuruman skaters who came out and ripped the course and all the kids who received skateboards!

Kimberley weekend festivities: Free vert skate clinic and competitions hosted by Jacques Allison from vert.co.za
Written by Megogoserial.ru Меч Короля Артура
Jacques Allison and his boys Christian and Terry came down to Kimberley from Johannesburg this past Friday to skate the vert ramp and prepare for the free skate clinic that was held on Saturday. Thanks to Boogaloos provided ten sets of pads and helmets for our local skaters for the weekend and many more to come.
During Saturday’s vert clinic, Jacque gave pointers to the skaters on the basic fundamentals of skating the vert ramp: Pumping, kickturning, how to fall properly, etc. Jacque hosted two clinics and taught over 30 skaters the basics of vert skating.
After the skate clinic, we hosted a highest kickturn contest. Only about ten skaters were brave enough to take on the challenge. In the end, Gerhard Botha and Damian Bramley tied with wheels touching coping, leading to a sudden death to determine the winner. After a heated head-to-head match, Gerhard took the win with a bs 5-0 and won R300 store credit at Thando skate shop. Damian took quite a hard slam but was able to skate just as hard the next day!
On Sunday we had two contests: A highest tail tap and longest pump. The highest tail tap was a great way to get the kids comfortable skating the ramp and eventually fakie tail stall on the coping and one day work their way up to dropping in. Gerhard Botha and Christian Potas made their marks but in the end it was Jacques Reynecke that won R300 store credit at Thando, tapping his tail only 8 inches below coping.
A larger number of kids entered the longest pump contest because they thought it would be an easy task, but keeping your momentum on the ramp for so long at a certain height is super tiring and not so easy! Jacque Reynecke pumped for 7 mins and 30 seconds before a gnarly flatbottom slam, but in the end Alec Balie took out Jacque and pumped for 8 minutes straight and won R300 store credit at Thando skate shop.
To keep the momentum of the weekend’s transition skating, the last contest on Sunday was a 15 minute jam-format contest on the quarter pipe section of the street course. Standout skaters include Damian Bramly with his rock & roll on the big quarter, Christian Potas who did a pivot nosegrab and a nollie shuv sex change, and Jacques Reynecke who learned half cab rock & roll during the contest! Our top skaters during the contest were Brad Balie and Gerhard Botha. Brad didn’t rifle out the most tricks but his tricks were some of the most difficult: switch rock & roll and blunt stall nosegrab in, earning him 2nd place and R300 at Thando skate shop. Gerhard Botha had several tricks including a nosepick to disaster and lien to tail from the small to the big quarter, earning him R500 at Thando skate shop.
Overall the weekend was a blast. Jacques was getting proper inverts every try and almost pulled a 540 on the vert. Big props to Jacques and his crew for coming from Johannesburg to host the free skate clinic on the vert ramp and showing everyone a great time!
