Go skateboarding day in NYC- know your history from Steve Rodriguez of 5boro

Back in the day in 2002, Kerel Roach (ABC crew) and Bryan Chin (Metrospective.com/ Officialnewyork.com) came up with an idea for the “All City Skate Jam.” Basically bringing it back to the early 90’s when skating was more about skating all day with all your homies(and anyone else who was out) and less about cliques and spots that no one wanted to share. So the ABC crew and Metrospective.com picked Sunday, July 14, 2002 as the day it would go off. The flyer was made and the info was posted online, and that Sunday was the first real mass skate/takeover of the city.
Then in 2003, the skateboard industry, led by great advocates like Don Brown, Justin Regan and the IASC (International Association of Skateboard Companies),came up with the concept of a“Go Skateboarding Day,” which has actually become a recognized official holiday of skateboarding. June 21st from there on out was the day that global celebrations/jams/contests would be held in honor of this holiday.

Since its inception back in 2005, the Love & Guts Art Show has gone on to become skateboarding’s preeminent art exhibitions. Held annually, and often with different themes, this year’s exhibition is centered around an extremely special milestone: Thrasher Magazine’s 30th Year Anniversary. To help celebrate this momentous occasion, Oakley and the Maloof Money Cup have partnered up to present this exhibition at MMC stops in New York, Washington D.C., and Orange County.
Often referred to as skateboarding’s bible, Thrasher Magazine has gone on to accumulate a spectacular catalog of iconic imagery throughout its 3-decade existence. During that time, Thrasher has aided in launching the careers of numerous photographers and skateboarders and with skateboard photography itself becoming such an amazing art form, it is only fitting that these exhibitions showcase images that helped define skateboarding.
Each show is slated to showcase works from photographers and artists affiliated with the San Francisco-based publication. Works from Kevin Thatcher, CR Stecyk III, Mofo, Bryce Kanights, Pushead, Luke Ogden, Christian Hosoi, Lance Dawes, Gabe Morford, Neckface, Michael Burnett, Patrick O’Dell, Lance Mountain, Pat Ngoho, Dennis McNett and many more will be on display at the aforementioned Maloof Money Cup stops.
