Maloofs to bring skateboarding to SA through 2015

Written by
SAPictures3

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Maloof Skateboarding has agreed to a three-year contract extension to bring the Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships to Kimberley, South Africa, through 2015.

The deal with the Northern Cape Provincial Government comes after Maloof Skateboarding staged a successful contest last fall on a custom skate park built near the "The Big Hole," a former diamond mine.

This year's South Africa contest will be Sept. 28-30.

"It was big for South Africa and great for us," said Joe Maloof, who along with brother Gavin owns the NBA's Sacramento Kings and launched the Maloof Money Cup contests in 2008. "They loved it so much that they actually came to us. It was a mutual idea to extend it. It filled up all the hotel rooms and brought thousands of people to the Kimberley area. It worked. They saw some great skateboarding."

Maloof said the contest helped kick-start skateboarding in South Africa.

"We made a statement with the youth and that's what the South African people love," Maloof said. "These kids now have a chance to make a living at it. We're getting to the kids, and that's what counts."

Maloof said a handful of other cities around the world want to host contests, and South Africa was the catalyst.

The Maloof Money Cup began in 2008 with a contest in Orange County, Calif. It expanded to New York and Washington, D.C., where the Maloofs built permanent skate parks.

There was no Maloof Money Cup in Orange County last year and there won't be any contests in the United States this year, Maloof said. He said the brothers hope to resume the U.S. contests next year.

Maloof said the brothers have run into difficulty having a permanent skate park built in Orange County. From 2008-10, the Maloof Money Cup was held during the the Orange County Fair and the course had to be torn out each time.

Washington DC Maloof Skate Park Now Open

Written by

Last week, the Maloof Money Cup Washington DC Skate Park opened to the general public. Designed by Pro Skater Geoff Rowley and Joe Ciaglia's team at California Skateparks, the 15,000-square-foot skate park is the first major skate park in Washington, D.C. and is inspired by Freedom Plaza and the architecture up and down Pennsylvania Avenue.

"It was important for us to take design elements from real D.C. skate spots and try to replicate them and hopefully complement them as much as possible," said Rowley. "The local skaters will recognize some of these influences like the Freedom Plaza Ledges and the Golden Rail made famous by legendary locals like Pepe Martinez, Chris Hall and many more original D.C. rippers," said Rowley.Andrew Reynolds winning Maloof Money Cup

Maloof Money Cup series returns for 2012 - Article from ESPN.com
by Chris Nieratko

My partner in NJSkateshop, Steve Lenardo, has a pretty spot-on theory about the state of skateboarding -- it's turning into professional wrestling. One can't help but see the correlation when everyone has a silly fictional nickname and you have grown men video-rap-beefing on the Internet. And of course there is the constant rumor mill. Recently the Maloof Money Cup scaled back its annual event held at the Magic Trade Show and scrapped its Southern California contest due to delays in the Huntington Beach Skatepark. In true wrestling fashion, a rumor quickly spread that the Maloof's were done and pulling out of skateboarding -- it was like Triple H started telling everyone The Undertaker was dead.

I get more bogus information coming across my office desk then one can believe (yes, I have an office and a desk) but this tidbit really caught my attention. If true I was going to be really bummed because the MMC is the only contest series currently committed to building permanent skateparks in the places they hold their events. I decided to call Tim McFerran and ask him if Hulk Hogan is, in fact, bald under his do-rag. Turns out the Maloofs are still committed to skateboarding and have chosen to take a page from David Stern's playbook, who has grown the NBA into a global phenomenon since he took over as commissioner in 1984.

Not long ago - Tyga (born Michael Stevenson) was just another kid from the hood struggling to rise above the negativity that surrounded him. Born and raised in the infamous Compton, CA armed with nothing but an amateur mixtape and hunger, he built solid local buzz through impressive live shows and an online hustle. Still, a kid with lofty dreams wondered if he’d ever catch that “big break”. Then one day a conversation at a popular LA sneaker store changed everything.

With today’s proliferation of mass media, pop culture icons have a tendency to seem overly ubiquitous. They stare at us from the covers of glossy magazines, talk to us from both the small and silver screen, interact with us through our laptops and hypnotize us with their inescapable hit singles. But too often these days, while our biggest stars may be omnipresent in our lives, we feel no genuine connection to them or their artistry.
