(Orange County, Calif. – June 29, 2012) – Sales of skateboarding merchandise in South Africa are up 10 percent in the last year, according to Boogaloos, the largest independent retailer of skateboarding goods in South Africa. The positive growth in skateboarding retail indicates skateboarding’s growing popularity since the launch of the Maloof Money Cup World Championships last September.

“In the period leading up to the Maloof contest in September we’ve seen a 10 percent increase in the sales of skateboarding hard goods, apparel, footwear and accessories. The Maloof Money Cup has made an amazing impact on the skateboarding community across South Africa and has significantly enhanced the sales of skateboarding products,” said Gavin Powell, Founder of Boogaloos. “The Maloof brand is the fastest growing skate brand in South Africa, and if they continue to do what they are doing, I think it’s quite possible they could be the dominant brand in South Africa next year. We see great potential for future growth and look forward to getting more Maloof merchandise in our stores.”

Maloof Skateboarding has established strong roots in the local communities through its “Skateboarding for Hope” and Pro Tours that engage the youth in local townships with year-round activities and promote skateboarding as a healthy activity, while giving away thousands of skateboards and shoes to kids in need. Brands participating in South Africa Pro Tours have included Globe, Girl, Element and Fallen.

In June, the 2012 Skateboarding for Hope tour kicked off and will visit 10 cities, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Soweto to offer skate clinics, skate demos and giveaways. The tour signals the official countdown to the 2012 Maloof Money Cup South Africa in Kimberley Sept. 28 – Oct. 2.

The world class skate park in Kimberley, built for the Maloof Money Cup World Championships, has become a destination for skateboarders from around the world and continues to provide economic benefits as it has established the township as a new skateboarding destination. A full time skate park manager is responsible for daily events and contests at the park, engaging local youth and driving the next generation of skateboarders.

“We’re excited to see the South African youth engaged in skateboarding,” said Joe Maloof, Founder of Maloof Skateboarding. “We started this contest in partnership with the Northern Cape to bring a positive, healthy activity to the youth of South Africa. I think we’re all surprised and excited to see just how quickly skateboarding is taking off in the townships. We look forward to our return to the country this fall when we hold the 2nd Annual Maloof Money Cup World Championships.”
