As the full moon sets over the vast dry plains of South Africa's Northern Cape, the world's best skateboarders depart having competed in their sport's world championships and a group of local kids prepare to take their place on a gleaming new skate park.
The glamorous Maloof Money Cup was held this year in the town of Kimberley, best known as the location of several diamond mines but also home to impoverished communities who share little in the wealth the mines create.
The Maloof Skateboarding Global Initiative says it aims to inspire a new generation of skateboarders and provide youths in places like Kimberley with a positive activity that keeps them out of trouble.

SA Amateur Skaters Compete Alongside Pros - Article From The New Age

Read Full Story at The New Age
The Maloof Money Cup World Championships in Kimberley main attraction for skateboarders may have been for R4m in prize money, but for fans who love the alternative sport, the opportunity to see their heroes up close turned out to be a dream come true for many.
The event is organised by Maloof Skateboarding, US company, in partnership with Kumba Iron Ore, Northern Cape Tourism and the Northern Cape provincial government. This partnership goes beyond just the World Championships.
They also initiated and are running the Skate for Hope programme which gives children from across the country the opportunity to compete in the amateur event by qualifying as wild card entries.
Following the inaugural skateboarding extravaganza in the Northern Cape city, organisers decided to increase the seating at the event and the decision paid dividends as the extended stands were quickly packed to the rafters.
The All City event comprised 10 teams of four skateboarders going head to head for the crown.
The winner in the event this year was team Alliance consisting of Sam Khumalo, Dlamini Dlamini, Ofentse Ramakanye and Sechaba the Bakersman.
Riders taking part in the amateur street event had to qualify through competitions held nationwide as part of the Skate for Hope initiative.
After a qualifying round, the final of the amateur street event was held on the final day.
“I’m so excited to have won, I never thought it would happen,” said Kanya Spani who won the amatuer street event.
His controlled and consistent skateboarding proved to be too good for second place Simon Stipcich whose tricks included the big hubba and a switch 360 flip over the rail.

The Deathwish Baker riders, Lizard King and Brian Herman joined the last leg of the Skateboarding for Hope community outreach initiative for demonstrations and training clinics in the Northern Cape mining towns of Kathu and Postmasburg at the weekend.
Skateboarding for Hope is a joint initiative between Maloof Skateboarding and the Northern Cape government to introduce the youth of South Africa to skateboarding as an affordable, accessible lifestyle alternative.
The Famous Stars and Straps Pro Tour starring Manny Santiago, Kurtis Colamonico, Luis Tolentino and Felix Arguelles will head for Johannesburg, KZN and Cape Town before hitting Kimberley on Thursday to compete in the Maloof contest for their share of the R4m prize purse. Skate fans will enjoy live skate demos and street skating with these professional American skateboarders.
Maloof vice president, Tim McFerran, said they were excited about this year’s pro tours. “The growth of skateboarding in South Africa is unmatched anywhere in the world. These tours will help to continue the growth and excitement about the sport. It is a great opportunity for local fans to see their heroes in action.

Local skateboarding enthusiasts will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be coached by the world’s top vert skateboarder in the run-up to the 2012 Maloof Money Cup world skateboarding championships.
Pierre Luc Gagnon, who was crowned as vert world champion after an amazing skateboarding display at last year’s contest in Kimberley, will be conducting two vert half-pipe clinics at the Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberley on September 24 and 25. He will also be defending his title during the Maloof Money Cup at the same venue from September 28-30.
According to the CEO of Maloof Skateboarding, Tim McFerran, the clinic will be offered free of charge, “but will be limited to the first 40 entrants to sign up via the website on maloofmoneycup.com. Twenty entrants will be accommodated for each of the one-day clinics,” he said.
McFerran said clinic attendants will not only receive personal attention from the champion, but “loads of cool prizes are up for grabs as well”.
“This is an unbelievable opportunity for young skateboarders to receive personal training from the best vert skateboarder in the world. This is what the Maloof championship is all about – paying it forward, exposing South African youth to the incredible sport of skateboarding.
“Getting world-class skateboarders to actively assist in helping these youngsters will be a huge boost for the sport. It’s like getting training tips from an Olympic gold medal winner,” said McFerran.

Maloof Cup Drives Increase in Retail Sales, South Africa’s Skateboarding Industry on the Rise
Written by Admin
Original Article from Market Watch
(Orange County, Calif. – June 29, 2012) – Sales of skateboarding merchandise in South Africa are up 10 percent in the last year, according to Boogaloos, the largest independent retailer of skateboarding goods in South Africa. The positive growth in skateboarding retail indicates skateboarding’s growing popularity since the launch of the Maloof Money Cup World Championships last September.
“In the period leading up to the Maloof contest in September we’ve seen a 10 percent increase in the sales of skateboarding hard goods, apparel, footwear and accessories. The Maloof Money Cup has made an amazing impact on the skateboarding community across South Africa and has significantly enhanced the sales of skateboarding products,” said Gavin Powell, Founder of Boogaloos. “The Maloof brand is the fastest growing skate brand in South Africa, and if they continue to do what they are doing, I think it’s quite possible they could be the dominant brand in South Africa next year. We see great potential for future growth and look forward to getting more Maloof merchandise in our stores.”
Maloof Skateboarding has established strong roots in the local communities through its “Skateboarding for Hope” and Pro Tours that engage the youth in local townships with year-round activities and promote skateboarding as a healthy activity, while giving away thousands of skateboards and shoes to kids in need. Brands participating in South Africa Pro Tours have included Globe, Girl, Element and Fallen.
In June, the 2012 Skateboarding for Hope tour kicked off and will visit 10 cities, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Soweto to offer skate clinics, skate demos and giveaways. The tour signals the official countdown to the 2012 Maloof Money Cup South Africa in Kimberley Sept. 28 – Oct. 2.
The world class skate park in Kimberley, built for the Maloof Money Cup World Championships, has become a destination for skateboarders from around the world and continues to provide economic benefits as it has established the township as a new skateboarding destination. A full time skate park manager is responsible for daily events and contests at the park, engaging local youth and driving the next generation of skateboarders.
“We’re excited to see the South African youth engaged in skateboarding,” said Joe Maloof, Founder of Maloof Skateboarding. “We started this contest in partnership with the Northern Cape to bring a positive, healthy activity to the youth of South Africa. I think we’re all surprised and excited to see just how quickly skateboarding is taking off in the townships. We look forward to our return to the country this fall when we hold the 2nd Annual Maloof Money Cup World Championships.”

Ive been accused of being a cynic on more than one occasion. It is the automatic response that all is not as it seems, or something along those lines. Im working on it? Moving swiftly along, during the beginning of October we were set to welcome a team of travelers from TOMS shoes, and our colleagues from Element USA. It was the beginning of the ElementTOMS board and shoe drop. Its been a year or more in the planning from our side and apparently 2 years and some change from the good people across the Atlantic. Here is the concept. For every pair of TOMS shoes you buy, the benevolent people at TOMS will give, gratis, a pair of shoes to a childperson in need. You read that correctly the first time. Buy one, give one away. Its called a One for One model, and TOMS seem to be pioneering a new way of doing things.

The Zoo York international tour to South Africa took place in the second week of April and included visits to Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg. Zoo riders Zered Bassett, Forrest Kirby and Brandon Westgate made the long trip across the pond and put together what Im calling the most productive international tour ever to go down in the country and, well, the continent of Africa for that matter. They did five demos in six days, hit countless street spots in all three cities, went out every night and managed a trip to the Lion park If thats not a productive week then I dont know what is.
