The Maloof money skateboarding for hope campaign has begun its outreach programme with a tour of cities surrounding Kimberley. First stop was Bloemfontein on Saturday.

This community outreach programme forms part of the run-up to the Maloof Money Cup world skateboarding championships, which will take place in Kimberley from September 28-30. The Skateboarding for Hope programme is a joint initiative between Maloof Skateboarding; retail partner Boogaloos and the provincial government. It aims to introduce the youth of South Africa to skateboarding as an exciting alternative sport.

According to the Northern Cape Tourism Authority marketing officer, Tebogo Velembo, hundreds of skateboarding enthusiasts in the Free State packed the Loch Logan Waterfront Mall in Bloemfontein for a non-stop skateboard action.

“Skate clinics and demonstrations by top riders such as Wandile Nsomi and Sam Khumalo, promotional give-aways, live music and a best-trick competition was the order of the day,” he said. Cash prizes up to R5000 were up for grabs, while the most talented skater on the day, Warrick Delport, won a wild card entry into the Maloof Money Cup amateur competition. Only ten wild cards are available nationwide.

Tim McFerran, CEO of Maloof Skateboarding said this was a great opportunity for the youth of the country to become involved with skateboarding, which is currently the fastest growing sport in the world.

“We’re excited about the Skateboarding for Hope tour as we feel skateboarding is an important part of today’s youth and provides for a healthy lifestyle.

“We are working closely with the local government to reach as many youth and underprivileged children as possible over the next four months.

“We will give away thousands of free T-shirts, skateboards and gear, while creating an official try-out for the Maloof amateur skateboarding contest and looking for the best skateboarders in South Africa,” he said.

Each Skateboarding for Hope activity also engages with children from underprivileged local communities to bring a message of hope and support.

Children will be receiving an element complete skateboard to start them on their skateboarding journey.
