The Skateboarding for Hope Tour caught up with the Buck Tour in George last Friday. Thanks to Old School Productions, we got some awesome pictures of the packed park. The Maloof Money Cup product giveaway was a great success to all the kids and we saw some great skating during the main & Best Trick Contest. Among the participants were Juan Smit , Alan Marola, Ivan Kesseler and many more. With R1000 on the line, the Best Trick contest ended with Christi Wiehahn's 270 backside lip –straight out the blocks.

The Maloof Skate Park in Kimberley, South Africa was home a tremendously successful Skateboarding for Hope Tour stop on the 16th of June.

(Orange County, Calif. – June 29, 2012) – Sales of skateboarding merchandise in South Africa are up 10 percent in the last year, according to Boogaloos, the largest independent retailer of skateboarding goods in South Africa. The positive growth in skateboarding retail indicates skateboarding’s growing popularity since the launch of the Maloof Money Cup World Championships last September.

“In the period leading up to the Maloof contest in September we’ve seen a 10 percent increase in the sales of skateboarding hard goods, apparel, footwear and accessories. The Maloof Money Cup has made an amazing impact on the skateboarding community across South Africa and has significantly enhanced the sales of skateboarding products,” said Gavin Powell, Founder of Boogaloos. “The Maloof brand is the fastest growing skate brand in South Africa, and if they continue to do what they are doing, I think it’s quite possible they could be the dominant brand in South Africa next year. We see great potential for future growth and look forward to getting more Maloof merchandise in our stores.”

Maloof Skateboarding has established strong roots in the local communities through its “Skateboarding for Hope” and Pro Tours that engage the youth in local townships with year-round activities and promote skateboarding as a healthy activity, while giving away thousands of skateboards and shoes to kids in need. Brands participating in South Africa Pro Tours have included Globe, Girl, Element and Fallen.

In June, the 2012 Skateboarding for Hope tour kicked off and will visit 10 cities, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Soweto to offer skate clinics, skate demos and giveaways. The tour signals the official countdown to the 2012 Maloof Money Cup South Africa in Kimberley Sept. 28 – Oct. 2.

The world class skate park in Kimberley, built for the Maloof Money Cup World Championships, has become a destination for skateboarders from around the world and continues to provide economic benefits as it has established the township as a new skateboarding destination. A full time skate park manager is responsible for daily events and contests at the park, engaging local youth and driving the next generation of skateboarders.

“We’re excited to see the South African youth engaged in skateboarding,” said Joe Maloof, Founder of Maloof Skateboarding. “We started this contest in partnership with the Northern Cape to bring a positive, healthy activity to the youth of South Africa. I think we’re all surprised and excited to see just how quickly skateboarding is taking off in the townships. We look forward to our return to the country this fall when we hold the 2nd Annual Maloof Money Cup World Championships.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA- May 31, 2012-

Pro skateboarder Garrett Hill has teamed with Maloof Money Cup and tech wizard Jason Ossenmacher and his team to develop BlackBook. This yearlong collaboration produces the first and only app that allows skateboarders to maintain their list of spots and tricks efficiently. Acting as its own private little black book, users can log their spots as a pin on a map along with all of the spot’s corresponding photos, videos, and a virtual to-do list of tricks. The application will launch alongside its own website, which will >continuously host contests and giveaways for users who actively share their BlackBook skate photos and skate clips from the app.

Hills says, “The app is simple to use and I don’t know a single person in skateboarding who doesn’t have a use for this app: everyone from street skaters to filmers and photographers-professional and otherwise.  We’ve all been demanding something like this for a long time, but no one was able to put their finger on how to go about it, until now. It’s not some novelty, people are really going to get a lot of use out of this app. Even in it’s developing stages, it’s really been crucial in helping me film for Zero’s Coldwar.”

As an introductory promotion, the app will be available for only $0.99 USD in the month of June.
(regular price will be $1.99 USD).

The state-of-the-art Maloof Skate Plaza in Kimberley is set to be a hive of activity for the next five months in the run-up to the Maloof Money Cup skateboarding world championships.

The championship will take place from September 28-30.

And to keep things moving, so to speak, a 22-year-old American Mike Koroczynsky, also known as “Chinner”, has been appointed director of Skateboard Park.

Hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, Chinner has been a passionate skateboarder for the past 11 years. He will oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the skate park as well as event planning.

Chinner who is studying hospitality management through Kent University, arrived in the country last weekend.

He said he was “blown away” by the skate park.

“This park is absolutely awesome, it’s really great.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in and organise demonstrations and contests. The plan is to host at least three to five events per week at this venue. We want to get the kids hyped about skateboarding and build their skills,” he said.

“We will even offer free weekly clinics for special groups such as kids at risk or in places of safety.”

Chinner will graduate in August after doing his summer internship in South Africa.

Tim McFerran, vice-president of Maloof Skateboarding, said: “I am really excited that we were able to get a skater of Chinner’s calibre. He will be able to work closely with top local skateboarders in Kimberley and teach them how to run the skate park, thereby creating local jobs.

“I know Chinner is the right person to help increase attendance to park from over South Africa and the world,” said McFerran.

“His appointment is just one of the new initiatives we are working on to expand on last year’s (championship) success.”

McFerran said Chinner’s job was to expose the youth to the skate park and to skateboarding.

“I definitely think that his work with the local youth will have a huge impact on improving their skateboarding skills and will allow them to reach their full potential.”

The Maloof Money Cup is considered to be the world’s premier showcase for professional and amateur skateboarding and is well-known around the world.

The Kimberly skate park is a world-class skate park and will continue to bring positive attention to the Northern Cape and the regions, said McFerran.

The world’s top professional and amateur skateboarders are expected to take part in the street and vert disciplines of the competition in September.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Maloof Skateboarding has agreed to a three-year contract extension to bring the Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships to Kimberley, South Africa, through 2015.

The deal with the Northern Cape Provincial Government comes after Maloof Skateboarding staged a successful contest last fall on a custom skate park built near the "The Big Hole," a former diamond mine.

This year's South Africa contest will be Sept. 28-30.

"It was big for South Africa and great for us," said Joe Maloof, who along with brother Gavin owns the NBA's Sacramento Kings and launched the Maloof Money Cup contests in 2008. "They loved it so much that they actually came to us. It was a mutual idea to extend it. It filled up all the hotel rooms and brought thousands of people to the Kimberley area. It worked. They saw some great skateboarding."

Maloof said the contest helped kick-start skateboarding in South Africa.

"We made a statement with the youth and that's what the South African people love," Maloof said. "These kids now have a chance to make a living at it. We're getting to the kids, and that's what counts."

Maloof said a handful of other cities around the world want to host contests, and South Africa was the catalyst.

The Maloof Money Cup began in 2008 with a contest in Orange County, Calif. It expanded to New York and Washington, D.C., where the Maloofs built permanent skate parks.

There was no Maloof Money Cup in Orange County last year and there won't be any contests in the United States this year, Maloof said. He said the brothers hope to resume the U.S. contests next year.

Maloof said the brothers have run into difficulty having a permanent skate park built in Orange County. From 2008-10, the Maloof Money Cup was held during the the Orange County Fair and the course had to be torn out each time.
